Your nervous system has a discharge mechanism. It has always had one. The problem is not that your body forgot how to use it. The problem is that you were taught to interrupt it.
Trembling after a shock. The exhale that becomes a sound. The jaw that needs to open wide and release something loud. These are not signs of breaking down. They are the system doing exactly what it was built to do.

The body stores what the mind moves past.
Stress is not psychological. It is a physical process. When the body registers a threat, real or perceived, it floods the bloodstream with cortisol and adrenaline, contracts the psoas, tightens the jaw and diaphragm, and prepares you to fight or flee.[1] The problem is that most modern threats do not end with a physical action. The argument ends. The meeting ends. The body never did what it loaded up to do. So the charge stays.
Animals in the wild do not develop PTSD at the same rates humans do because they complete the stress cycle.[2] A gazelle that escapes a lion shakes for several minutes afterward, then returns to grazing. The shaking is the completion. The biology expects it. We interrupt it.
Peter Levine called it the "thwarted defensive response." The body mobilized. Never discharged. Learned to hold the tension as a substitute for resolution.[3]

Shaking is not a symptom. It is the solution.
Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) were developed specifically to induce the tremors the body was going to produce anyway.[4] You fatigue the legs and hips through a short sequence of positions until they begin to shake involuntarily. The target is the psoas: the deepest muscle in the body, the one that contracts first in a fear response and releases last. When it finally lets go, the vibration moves upward through the spine.
It looks uncontrolled. It is not. The trembling is the nervous system completing an arc it left open. I have watched this happen with people I work with. There is often embarrassment first, because the body moving without instruction feels like a loss of control. Then the shaking slows. There is a silence afterward that feels different from the silence before.

The lion's breath does the opposite. It arrives at the same place.
Simhasana comes from Hatha yoga.[5] You inhale deeply through the nose, then exhale through the mouth with the tongue extended, the eyes wide, and a sound that lands somewhere between a roar and a long release. It stimulates the vagus nerve through the throat and jaw, where most people carry the compressed, contained version of what they never said out loud.
I learned this at a women's tantra retreat. Not as something I chose. They made us do it. At some point it became automatic. My main partner has learned to recognize it. When I do it in a supermarket, or on the street, without realizing I am doing it, he laughs. That is how natural the discharge became: my body now uses it before my mind decides to.
The absurdity is not incidental. Something in you has to override the training that says this particular sound, in this particular place, is too much.

There are five other practices that work the same way.
These are not breathing exercises designed to calm you down. They are discharge mechanisms. Exits, not covers. Each one completes something the body started.
Humming activates the vagus nerve directly. Levine designed the "voo" practice specifically for the freeze response: a long exhale on a low sound felt in the chest, quiet enough that no one notices.[3] It targets the immobilization state rather than the fight-or-flight charge.
The physiological sigh uses a double inhale through the nose: short, then shorter, followed by a long slow exhale. Research from Huberman's lab at Stanford showed this is the fastest single technique for shifting autonomic state toward parasympathetic dominance.[6] It reinflates collapsed alveoli and signals safety to the brainstem.
Stomping or jumping for ninety seconds discharges adrenaline through the legs. No instruction required. The biology does not care that you are in your kitchen.
Cold water on the face triggers the dive reflex, which slows heart rate immediately.[7] It is used in dialectical behavior therapy specifically for crisis moments, but the mechanism is available to anyone with a sink.
Toning (sustaining a vowel sound at a comfortable pitch) vibrates the larynx and reaches the vagus nerve through a different pathway than the voo sound. Less targeted, more diffuse. Some people find it more accessible than the structured practices.
None of these require a studio, a mat, a practitioner, or a diagnosis. That is not a small thing.

Why we stopped.
Children shake, roar, stomp, and make sounds without instruction. Adults learn to contain all of it. The suppression is taught without being named. You learn that trembling is embarrassing, that the sound is too much, that a clenched jaw is more appropriate than the exhale that wants to happen.
The body adapts. It redistributes the charge as chronic tension, as low-grade anxiety, as the persistent sense of something unresolved.[1]
These practices work because they give the biology what it was waiting for. They do not create a new response. They complete an old one.
I work with people who have spent years managing their nervous systems: supplements, meditation, therapy. Without ever learning that the discharge mechanism was already there. It did not need to be built. It needed permission.
